Dr. Muhammad Hamdan Waqas is a distinguished Interventional Cardiologist with over 17 years of clinical and procedural experience. He graduated with distinction followed by completion of rigorous postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at the prestigious Mayo Hospital, Lahore, one of the country’s foremost centers for clinical excellence and academic development.
Following his internal medicine training, Dr. Hamdan undertook formal cardiology training at a high-volume tertiary care cardiac center, culminating in the award of Fellowship in Cardiology (FCPS) in 2015. He subsequently served as a Senior Registrar at the Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology, a leading cardiovascular institute known for its comprehensive cardiac, neurovascular, and peripheral interventional services — and later as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist. During this time, he honed his expertise in acute and elective cardiovascular care, as well as both non-invasive and invasive diagnostic modalities.
His commitment to professional excellence led to his selection for the prestigious Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, UK — one of the top European cardiac centers. During this fellowship, Dr. Hamdan received advanced training in complex coronary interventions and intravascular imaging techniques, including Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). He also had exposure to perform complex procedures involving chronic total occlusions (CTOs), bifurcation lesions, and high-risk coronary anatomy. He also developed proficiency in the use of Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR), enabling precise physiological assessment of coronary stenoses and enhancing decision-making for revascularization strategies.
Dr. Hamdan has independently performed over 7,000 coronary procedures as first operator, including more than 1,000 primary PCI cases. His expertise spans the full spectrum of interventional and general cardiology. He is highly proficient in transthoracic echocardiography for the evaluation of structural heart disease, ventricular function, and valvular pathology. He also regularly interprets treadmill exercise stress tests for ischemic risk assessment and functional capacity evaluation. Additionally, he is adept at analyzing 24-hour Holter monitoring for arrhythmia detection and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring for complex hypertensive profiles.
Clinically, Dr. Hamdan is known for his thorough, patient-focused approach — integrating history, physical examination, cardiac imaging, and functional studies to formulate safe, evidence-based management plans. His diagnostic acumen is complemented by sound procedural judgment in managing acute coronary syndromes, chronic stable angina, heart failure, and post-PCI surveillance.
A dedicated academician, Dr. Hamdan, has contributed actively to the teaching of medical students and cardiology trainees and has participated in clinical research initiatives. He stays abreast of global cardiology advancements through regular engagement in national and international scientific conferences.
Dr. Hamdan is fluent in English, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi, and is respected for his clinical precision, empathetic communication, and unwavering commitment to advancing cardiovascular care.
